Autumn Planting
Water-wise gardening; get drought-ready
Plant these varieties now so their roots can establish before spring. Autumn planting increases drought tolerance, reduces the need for staking and often gives larger plants in spring. In addition, some varieties need to be planted by autumn in order to guarantee flowers this coming spring.
I have selected a range of plants that are fully hardy, relatively slug-tolerant, and that will cope with clay soils over winter (but see the last section below for plants that can handle spots that get water-logged). Select evergreen, semi-evergreen and/or woody plants to make it easier to remember where they were planted, or use markers when you are planting non-evergreen, herbaceous varieties.
Many of the plants below will be available when I re-open on 22 September and the remainder are coming soon!
Plants for spots that get waterlogged over winter
These plants can handle a spot that gets water-logged over winter. Some require a damp soil all year round while others will also flourish in a drier soil. This selection includes plants that prefer sun and plants that prefer shade. Click on the photos for more information.
