This Latin American wildflower is very popular with butterflies and also attracts bees and other pollinators. It later provides seed for garden birds. Verbena bonariensis plants have an open structure and the flowering stems grow to 1.5m tall so they mingle well with other plants at the back of a border. Grows to 45cm across in full sun and a moist but well-drained soil. Produces purple flowers from June to October.
This plant will readily self-seed, or deadhead finished flowers to get a longer flowering season and to prevent self-seeding. Cut back last year's growth in spring after the new shoots have started to emerge.
