Pineapple broom (also known as Moroccan broom and Cytisus battandieri) is a small tree that produces masses of yellow flowers from May to June that have a gorgeous scent of pineapple and are a magnet for bees, butterflies, hoverflies and beetles. Its silvery leaves are also very attractive from early spring to late autumn. Grows to 4m high and 4m wide in full sun and a well-drained soil.
It is hard to source seed for this plant so I have collected my own and run a series of trials for their sowing conditions. The seed I sell have all been scarified as this was necessary to achieve germination.
Sow 3mm deep in seed compost and place indoors at about 20oC. Once the seedlings have been pricked out, they can be placed in an unheated greenhouse or similar. Protect the young plants from slugs and snails.
